In our view, the cultural tendency to define or approach therapy primarily in terms of functionality and ‘professionalism’ is misconceived and limiting. Conceptions of relationship, personhood and sacred space are more accurate and more useful in approaching the core of what heals and supports growth – whether or not either party to the therapeutic alliance uses this language.
