Michael Eigen on contact and suffering

‘Psychoanalysis often says that increased capacity for contact involves increased ability to undergo suffering. A person works towards sustaining intense psychic pressures. For example, Winnicott writes, ‘probably the greatest suffering in the human world is the suffering of the normal or healthy or mature person.’ Suffering is part of health. The more psyche, the more suffering. One makes oneself smaller to avoid pain.’
