The Power of Addiction and The Addiction of Power: Gabor Maté at TEDxRio+20

Another wonderful talk from Gabor Maté, this time coming in at a little under 19 minutes.

We think he’s bang on, both in terms of what he says about addiction and in terms of the wider implications of this for us in relationship and in community.  He defines ‘addiction’ in terms of a seeking from external sources of an experience of – for example – well-being or relief or solace that the person is unable to generate from internal sources, and which has adverse consequences but which the person is nonetheless unable to stop. This may be anything from full-blown heroin use to excessive shopping. We like his inclusion of himself in this – he does not do ‘expert/patient’/’us and them’. We experience him as very person-centred.
